7th Annual Conference Applications now open!

SAWomEng is proud to announce that the applications for the 7th Annual Conference are now open!If you are an energetic, enthusiastic and vibrant female student who is ... more

Will you share your conference experience with the world?

by Chipo Chimhundu on Saturday, Jul 16th, 2011

The 6th annual SAWomEng conference was absolutely phenomenal! Networks were established, lives were changed, career paths became clearer and young women were inspired. The world needs to know that change is coming and how this is happening. Delegates, let us share our experiences of the conference. Other women in engineering need to know what you now know and how they can be exposed to it. The world needs to learn how we are pulling each other up on our climb up the ladder. Become an inspiration to someone who could not attend this year by giving them a window into your experiences and remember this; however insignificant it may seem, if it touched you it may touch someone else :-)

Something I wrote about the conference...it's been a long time coming, just didn't have time to post it up though, enjoy!! ;-)

“It all started at the back of a Structures lecture...” You can see how the two minds could envision something so great as they collaborate in retelling what seems like a tale. Today they sit in the presence of world renowned leaders like Thabo Mbeki and Michelle Obama. Today I can be proud of the opportunity I was given to be a part of the 6th annual conference.

I walk away from the experience as a young woman who has discovered her role in society, to positively impact people from all walks of life. Having met and engaged with inspirational individuals who have done the same in various ways was not for information sake but made me realise the power of a determined woman.

I walk away with contacts from a vast network of people, memories and friendships, especially those formed during the long hours of working on the technical project (Team Cherrywood).

I walk away equipped, as a future female employee in a male dominated industry, a future wife and a future mother with a balanced life.

I walk away with a great respect and appreciation for companies and individuals that sponsored such an initiative to invest in some of the best aspiring female engineers in the country.

As I walk away, I keep within a dream, my dream! I keep the motivation of making it a reality. I keep all that I’ve learnt in 6 days, which has fast tracked me on my journey to realising this dream. I will remain humble for the opportunity afforded to me.

But as I walk away, I will continue on my journey and realise my dream as I walk within the network of such inspirational women, South African Women in Engineering!

Hey all,so the SaWomEng Conference this year was out of this world. It is definitely something I would recommend for any female engineering student in their third, final or post grad year!I personally learnt about so many different things which are of importance if one is going to be a successful engineer one day, this included things such as how to balance your life, networking skills, presentation skills and mentoring!I had the opportunity to engage in conversations with amazing female engineers who are heading big companies and are really making their mark, I have no idea where I would have had the opportunity to meet such influential people had it not been for this conference. This was a real eye-opening experience and I found myself learning so much about the companies who sponsored this year's event, who would've thought so many exciting opportunities for young engineers exist with so many companies, I'm talking about companies such as VW, Murray and Roberts, Unilever and Denel Dynamics, just to mention a few!I'm currently a Denel Dynamics bursar and a mentor for 4 first year female engineering students at the University of Pretoria, one of them who is studying Mechanical Engineering as a result of being at one of the GirlEng workshops! It's really amazing how the SaWomEng family has grown, and how without even planning it, I'm a mentor to a girl who attended the GirlEng workshop! This really shows how awesome SaWomEng is and how each and every single one of us has a role in ensuring that more female engineers enter the South African and African economy as a whole and truly make a difference in this wonderful continent that is full of so much potential! The future is literally in your hands- if you were to ask me, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I wish every female engineering student could be part of, you really wouldn't want to miss out on something so phenomenal and life-changing!Good luck to all the applicant for next year's conference!!
