SAWomEng Conference 2009

by Traci Reddy on Sunday, Jun 21st, 2009
2009 has been a phenomenal year for SAWomEng. We have started to add to the engineering pipeline dream, with our new initiative GirlEng, and hosted our flagship event, the SAWomEng Conference. The 3rd National SAWomEng Conference took place in Cape Town from the 21 - 26 June 2009. The topic of this year's technical project was: The upgrading Informal settlements using Sustainable Development and Green Engineering. 70 of the brightest female minds studying engineering were tasked with the responsibility of engineering creative and innovative Solutions to this harrowing South African reality.

The delegates found themselves challenged from the time they arrived, with the SAWomEng Amazing Race, to the time they left, with the Dreamfields project, going into the townships and being part of social development with BHP Billiton. In between, there was a mix of exciting Sponsor evenings with Unilever and the CBE, and other events focused on self development by Yvonne Finch, networking by Arifa Parkar, finding the right opportunity with the career fair and providing delegate with mentors from sponsoring companies.

The conference was definitely a star-studded affair, as it was attended by two National Government Ministers: The Minster of Public Works, Geoff Doidge and the Minster of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor. Hon Minister Doidge attended an evening function sponsored by the Council for the Built Environment, whilst Hon Minister Pandor delivered the keynote address at the gala dinner.

Minister Geoff Doidge, inspired delegates when he spoke of the immense opportunities that exist for young people in the Engineering and Built environment profession. He both surprised and impressed delegates when he disclosed that he was a member of the infamous social networking website: Facebook.

Minister Pandor emphasized the need for support of women at all levels of their education. Delegates were impressed by her own academic accolades as well as her in-depth understanding of the challenges that face the South African education system.

Whilst SAWomEng is a fledgling organization, there is certainly not a shortage of aspirations and energy for future interventions. Our latest daydream involves the SAWomEng pipeline dream. Our goal is to establish a consolidated and holistic intervention at the high school, higher education as well as young graduate stage of the skills pipeline.

Lookout 2010, there are exciting things to come!!!
