Technical Project: Challenge IV

by Sakhile Masuku on Thursday, Mar 31st, 2011

Water is one of the key building blocks for life – human beings cannot survive without it. It is essential for use in agriculture and industry and is even used to generate electricity. The provision of water and sanitation services that are efficient, affordable, economical and sustainable is a basic human right. Researchers estimate climate change will bring marked changes in rainfall patterns which will lead to increased pressure on water suppliers to meet increased domestic demand.  As demand for water continues to rise steadily, it is important that we implement sustainable water management practices to deal with the challenges caused by water scarcity.

 i. The South African constitution recognises water provision as a basic human right, how many litres per day is  each person entitled to?

ii. Identify 5 ways in which you can conserve water in your home?

iii. How much water do you save with a low flush toilet instead of a full flush?

iv. What was the theme for this year’s World Water Day, held on 22 March in Cape Town?
