SAWomEng Conference

Motivate, Empower and celebrate the next generation of women in engineering!

The SAWomEng Conference provides a unique platform where students, sponsors, academics and industry can come together and share their experiences. The SAWomEng conference has been held since 2005. Initially, as a one day conference but this quickly expanded to a National Conference. This year SAWomEng is proud to announce it will be hosting its 6th National Conference!!!

The conference is aimed at addressing the needs of female engineering students. Seventy of the best and brightest female engineering students from across the country are selected to participate in the conference.

During the conference, the SAWomEng core pillars:
1.    Igniting the engineering flame
2.    Mentorship
3.    To incubate the engineering mind
4.    Meeting of the minds between old and new engineers
5.    Embracing the multi-faceted nature of female engineers

are introduced through a range of specific and meaningful activities.

The SAWomEng Conference theme is directly linked to the Technical Project. Since the 1980s, the idea of human sustainability has become increasingly associated with the integration of economic, social and environmental spheres. In 1989, the World Commission on Environment and Development articulated what has now become a widely accepted definition of sustainability: "[to meet] the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

It is against this backdrop that the SAWomEng Conference presents its Technical Project which aims at tackling relevant and current engineering problems that plague, not only South Africa but the world over. Through the conference, delegates are exposed to the social and economic impact that these engineering problems have on society and their surroundings and therefore tackle the problem from a range of angles. The project entails that the delegates employ their skills as engineering students to find feasible solutions by establishing a framework of sustainable approaches.

The information for the project is sourced in several ways, viz., readings, internet research, and tours as well as from a panel of experts, in order for the delegates to have a comprehensive understanding of the project and its requirements. In addition, the delegates will be divided into multi-disciplinary groups which will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills from one discipline to another.
Through the Technical Project, delegates are able to showcase their technical brilliance and innovativeness, consequently bringing a fresh perspective to the engineering industry.

Furthermore, delegates engage in various other activities, including meeting leading women in industry, being assigned and engage with mentors (female engineers from our sponsoring companies), being exposed to various sponsoring companies at the career fair and celebrating being women in engineering. The conference, has in the past, attracted speakers such as Minister of Science & Technolgy Naledi Pandor, City Press Editor Ferial Haffajee and Minister of Public Works, Honourable Geoffrey Doidge.

A team of dedicated students volunteer their time, skills and energy and work tirelessly to ensure that each and every activity at the conference is a success.
