Volkswagen
was founded in the late 1930’s in Germany and the popularity of its
vehicles has grown to such levels that it has become Europe’s largest
carmaker. Today the Volkswagen Group has formed a control structure
comprising four regions around the world, one of them including South
Africa.
Volkswagen South Africa was established in 1946 and the first
locally-made VW Beetle appeared in 1951. Since then, Volkswagen has
become one of the main passenger car manufacturers in the country, to
such an extent that more than one in five cars sold is a Volkswagen. VW
is one of the largest foreign employers in South Africa, employing over
6000 people. The company is based just outside Port Elizabeth in a town
called Uitenhage.
