Dr Yvonne Hansen
BSc PhD Chemical Engineering
Topic: Sustainable upliftment of Informal Settlements

Dr Yvonne Hansen completed her undergraduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and obtained her PhD from the University Of Sydney, Australia. Her PhD focused on extending the capabilities of Life Cycle Assessment to include impacts from solid waste management. Yvonne’s postdoctoral work at the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey applied LCA to the chemicals, metals and building materials industry sectors, with particular focus on carbon footprints, embodied carbon and embodied energy as well as the relationship between carbon-added and value-added along complete supply chains. Yvonne was also involved in a UNEP funded project to develop an integrated solid waste management plan for the City of Maseru in Lesotho.
Currently, she holds a part-time position at the African Centre for Cities where she works on urban sustainability issues and runs the Climate Change City Lab. Yvonne is also a partner in a sustainability consulting company, The Green House.
