Jane English is head of the Professional Communication Studies and Services Department (PCS) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She lectures on “effective communication” to masters students (mining) on the Anglo Platinum Technical Graduate Programme and consults to numerous organizations.


Dr English’s research focus is women in construction and explores issues such as communication, employment, training and skills acquisition. This offers practical outcomes, such as a programme developed for Murray & Roberts Construction Cape, with a Xhosa and Zulu-speaking trainer, addressing communications challenges arising from the diverse cultural mix. She has also addressed numerous construction industry conferences such as the Tripartite Meeting on the Construction Industry in the 21st Century, Geneva (2001) and the annual international CIB conference.

 
In the field of professional communication, Jane has produced and co-authored several publications and training tools including the presentation skills DVD “SpeakEasy” and the textbook “Professional Communication: Effective Written and Spoken Messages”. Corporate clients include ARCUS GIBB, Old Mutual, Woolworths, Investec, KPMG, the Botswana National Productivity Centre, PriceWaterHouseCoopers and Hulett Aluminium Community / NGO clients include the Special Investigating Unit, Raymond Ackerman School of Entrepreneurship, Cape Chamber of Commerce, National Botanical Institute, NICRO and the Black Sash. Dr English has also convened and delivered regular courses for the UCT Graduate School of Business, Stellenbosch University, and Damelin College.
