Lecturer University of Cape Town
Sustainable upliftment of informal settlements

Dr Kevin Winter is a lecturer in environmental management at the Environmental and Geographical Science Department, University of Cape Town. His focus is mainly on water monitoring and water analysis. Dr Winter completed a PhD on ‘community involvement in environmental initiatives’ which examined how interest groups voluntary contribute to sustainability in the long term. His most recent research involves studying the impact and management of greywater disposal on surfaces in and around shack housing. The most recent research attempts to introduce appropriate technologies through co-operative and participatory involvement of various stakeholders and includes local residents in the decision making. Thus far the findings indicate that greywater cannot be managed effectively unless it is fully integrated into the management of water supply, sanitation, health and drainage.
