Sustainable upliftment of informal settlements
Gerry Adlard is a development consultant based in Cape Town who has been involved in the management and coordination of integrated human settlements for poor people for 25 years. The most recent of these was integrated Serviced Land Project (the iSLP) that delivered 32 000 starter homes plus all the associated facilities for 30 communities.
He has consulted to provincial and local government, the private sector, and the United Nations Development Programme in Southern Sudan. He has particular interest in informal settlements. In 2002 he led the publication of The Informal Settlement Handbook, which was a collaborative venture by the Province and City. He currently consults to the City of Cape Town to champion the design and establishment of a holistic and city-scale improvement strategy for informal settlements.
He has a BSc (Econ) (Hons) and an MPhil in Urban Infrastructure Design and Management and is now engaged in research for a PhD on the subject of participative development, in association with the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town.
